9 Questions For Red and Howling
I’ve been a big fan of renowned cartoonist Amy Luwis and her Red and Howling creations for a few years. Her unique blend of eye-catching images of animals and odd humans, coupled with humourous, sometimes pithy, captions appeals greatly to me. As an early admirer, I’m delighted to see how Red and Howling’s worldwide fan-base has grown and grown, as more people come to appreciate Amy’s art.
Red and Howling’s colourful, uniquely quirky cartoons are now found across social media. They’re popular not only because they tickle funny bones, but more than this, the messages they contain hang around long after the chuckling stops. Amy’s dedicated to promoting animal welfare, and as co-founder of Adopt-A-Pet, North America’s largest non-profit pet adoption website, her commitment to animals speaks for itself. She’s a big supporter of anti-puppy industry campaigns, and uses her art and skills to support many rescues and promote adoption.
As possibly her number one fan (that’s not at all creepy, we’ve become friends, honest!) I’m delighted that Amy recently found time in her schedule to give me an illustrated interview (…and include my sassy schnauzers!)
Why do you cartoon?
It’s a great way to communicate difficult subjects and to bring some levity to them.
What do you like to draw the most?
Dogs!
What do you like to draw the least?
Myself
Why are animals so otherworldly special?
They accept and love us unconditionally.
What makes life bearable?
Dog hugs.
At this point in the interview, Amy decided to go off-piste and as she’s an artist, I had to let her, creative geniuses are not easily controlled…plus I love what she’s done with my book covers!
What would you recommend as a stocking filler or brilliant gift?
Any book by Janetta Harvey
(I am very flattered by Amy’s endorsement of my books, especially as she’s not only a brilliant cartoonist, she’s also an author, her book ‘For Dog’s Sake’ was published earlier this year).
What would you recommend as a stocking stuffer/awesome gift, if all books by Janetta Harvey had disappeared from the face of the earth (ed: heaven forbid) and were sold out (ed: ok, less scary, quite exciting, if unlikely).
A Red and Howling tea mug, so you can drink tea while you’re waiting for your back-ordered Janetta Harvey book to arrive.
NB: You can grab a tea mug, in the Red and Howling shop here
What do you think more people should do?
Adopt their furry family members, don’t buy them.
If you were granted ONE wish, what would it be?
Everyone would treat others with kindness.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this little insight into a creative, cartoony mind – look out for the appearance of more sassy schnauzers in the months to come, Amy’s fallen under their spell – and has something special planned for the Schnauzerfest 2017 Raffle. More on that next year!
