When Three Becomes Two
I’ve just received a message about Merlin, a brave dog who I’ve written about several times since he was first rescued from a terrible breeding farm (read Merlin’s journey here.) Merlin is currently with the vet receiving surgery for a cruciate ligament rupture. This is always a difficult injury for any dog, but for Merlin it’s a major setback as he’s a tripaw, having had his leg amputated during his early days of rescue. The puppy farmer who confined Merlin to a life of breeding and utter misery had ignored a huge leg tumour, meaning that by the time he was lifted out of the dark hell of a breeding shed, the only way to save his life was for him to lose his leg.

The sarcoma on Merlin’s leg was huge and weighed over 1kg.
That was 20 months ago and since then Merlin has adapted courageously to a three-legged life as can be seen in this joyous video of him running wildly on the beach with his adopted sisters.

Life is sometimes painfully unjust and why dogs who have already suffered unthinkable cruelty have to endure more challenges is a mystery I will never understand. But I’ve absolutely no doubt at all that Merlin will dig deep into his amazing soul and pull through this setback in no time at all and we’ll soon be seeing him up hopping around once again on his three precious legs.
