Update on Susie-Belle’s eyes
During the summer we had bad news on Susie-Belle’s eyes, she was getting recurrent and persistent inflammation in her left one. This is the one with the new lens so really it’s the one we need to be most vigilant with as her right one has a cataract still, which we hope we won’t have to have any surgery on in future. So, her left eye gives her the best vision.
The veterinary opthalmologist wasn’t sure what was causing the inflammation, it could be the dry-eye (KCS), could be a reaction to the tacrolimus ointment that we’re using for the KCS (she was unresponsive to the more usual Optimmune cream), or it could be unconnected, either way she’s been on and off steroid drops now for several weeks and has had regular checks. At the last appointment we discussed stopping the tacrolimus, the risk of this is that the KCS returns and damages her corneas.
However, in the last couple of weeks, she’s had no steroid drops and I thought the inflammation was a lot better, in fact some days I didn’t really think there seemed to be much of a problem. And today, that was confirmed, we had good news at the vet. Mr Yellowley did his usual peering in through his various bits of equipment, chatting along to me and Susie-Belle all the time – he’s a very chatty Geordie who loves golf and eyes – and he said they looked perfect, well, perfect for Susie-Belle, her tear production is still not brilliant, but she seems out of the woods…..for the time being. We’ve put it down to some kind of seasonal irritation and that’s good enough for me.
Susie-Belle found the whole morning pretty tiring and was glad to get home to celebrate her good news with a snooze.
