Today is the warmest and sunniest of the year by far. It’s beautiful here and after the grim wet winter we’ve been through, it’s great to have had a few dry days and even better, it looks set to stay with us for a bit. It’s amazing how much the weather has affected our enjoyment of each day; I’m not normally one who minds the winter, in fact I rather enjoy cold, dark days if I can retreat to the warmth of the house once we’ve been out and about on our walks. But this winter, it hasn’t been cold, it’s just been relentlessly wet and frequently very windy, not nice conditions to walk in, for me or the girls. Cold weather we can manage to take pleasure in, but wet and windy for week after week has taken some resilience to avoid being dragged down by.
But, hopefully the wet and dreary days are behind us and we can now head into some spring time cheer, blue skies and bright sunshine. Susie-Belle’s cruciate ligament tear, which she did in November, has made the winter tiresome too, for her it has meant limited activity and weeks of painkillers, but she does seem to be well on the mend. I had hoped she would be fully healed by the end of February, but she seemed to slip backwards a couple of weeks ago and was hobbling quite badly once again so I had to put her back on the painkillers.
With the brighter weather the last day or so, it seems to have either coincided with an improvement again in her knee, or, it may have helped the knee – in Chinese medicine, cold, damp weather exacerbates issues like this, so no doubt it is the same for dogs – so I’m also thankful the weather is warming and drying up for the sake of Susie-Belle’s knee!
Our thoughts are beginning to turn to the summer camping trips and swimming activities. Our first camp will be in the Peak District at the Annual Schnauzer weekend in mid May. This is the 3rd year it’ll run and we’re looking forward to returning again, last year was Twinkle’s first camp and like the other two she loved it. Susie-Belle won’t be walking far, but we’re hoping to take part in most of the weekend. I’m hoping this year to combine a couple of weekend camping and swimming trips and am on the search for a perfect, river-side campsite within a couple of hours drive. A tall order but ever the optimist, I shall keep looking. I had my first cold water swim at the Lido this morning, a bracing 15 minutes and perfect start to the weekend. Here’s to many more Lido swims and sunny weekends. Have a lovely one everyone.
